STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The General Practice Residency Program sponsored by Mercy Hospital, St. Louis consists of 12 months of advanced training in clinical dentistry conducted primarily within a hospital environment. The level of instruction is consistent with that of post-graduate training and is designed to expand the scope and depth of the graduates’ knowledge and skills to enable them to provide comprehensive oral health care to a wide range of patients.
The purpose of the program is to provide the recent dental graduate the opportunity to enhance his/her knowledge of general medicine, oral disease, and diagnostic and therapeutic skills. This program will provide the opportunity to diagnose and treat oral diseases in medically compromised patients in order to appreciate the relationship between systemic illness and its effects on oral health, as well as better understand the integral and interactive role oral health plays in total health.
Both didactic and clinical instructions are provided in the various disciplines of dentistry. This instruction is provided by general practitioners and specialists. Dental care is provided to both ambulatory and hospitalized patients. Approximately 60% of the residents’ time is spent in direct delivery of oral health care.
Off-service rotations may include the following: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesiology, Critical Care, Craniofacial team, Head & Neck Oncology, Emergency Medicine, Trauma and General Surgery. These rotations are intended to provide the resident with a thorough, broad-based educational experience.
Community service is the foundation of our medical center’s philosophy of care. The Sisters of Mercy are committed to making a difference in the lives of the people they serve. Residents are reminded and exposed to this commitment on many levels and the program is built upon this pledge to serve.
